Etiquettes and Supplications for Daily Practices
Etiquettes of Drinking Water:
Before drinking water, look at the container, especially at night. The Messenger of Allah Almighty (may Allah Almighty bless him and give him peace) forbade drinking directly from containers with narrow mouths, such as skins or bottles, to avoid the possibility of harmful insects being inside or causing harm. Before drinking, say:
“Bismillah” (In the name of Allah Almighty). Drink with your right hand, and it is better to drink while sitting. Drink in three breaths or more, not all at once in one breath. At the end of drinking, say “Alhamdulillah” (All praise is due to Allah Almighty). Do not drink from gold or silver vessels.
Etiquettes of Wearing Clothes:
Before putting on or taking off your clothes, say “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah Almighty). When dressing, start with the right side, and recite this supplication:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلا قُوَّةٍ
“Alhamdu lillāhil-ladhī kasānī hādhā wa razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah.”
(Praise and thanks be to Allah Almighty, who clothed me with this garment and provided it to me without any power or strength from myself.)
When removing clothes, begin with the left side.
For new clothes, say this supplication:
اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ أَنْتَ كَسَوْتَنِيهِ، أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِهِ وَخَيْرِ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهِ وَشَرِّ مَا صُنِعَ لَهُ
“Allāhumma laka al-ḥamdu anta kasawtanīhi, as’aluka min khayrihi wa khayri mā ṣuni‘a lah, wa a‘ūdhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri mā ṣuni‘a lah.”
(O Allah Almighty, all praise is for You; You are the One who has clothed me with it. I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for.)
When someone else wears new clothes, it is sunnah to say to them:
تُبْلَى وَیُخْلِفُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى
“Tublā wa yukhlifullāhu ta‘ālā.” (May you wear it out, and may Allah Almighty replace it for you with something better.)
Etiquettes of Wearing Shoes:
The Prophet (may Allah Almighty bless him and give him peace) said:
“When one of you puts on shoes (or boots), let him start with the right foot, and when removing them, let him start with the left foot. Let him put both on together or remove both together.”
